I will try and keep up with this the best I can, but I enter another heavy travel season in a week...

News so far for next season:

1.   New offensive coordinator (stolen from the Golden Gophers)

2.   KJ Hamler to enter the NFL draft

3.   Pat Freiermuth returning

4.   Limegrover's (offensive line coach) contract not renewed.

Projected strengths of the 2020 team:

1.  Tight End
2.  Linebackers
3.  Offensive Line

Projected weaknesses of the 2020 team:

1.  Wide Receivers
2.  Safeties

Penn State just hired a new OLine coach. They sniped BC’s coach.  BC had 4 or 5 OLineman make the all ACC team, and were 4th in the country in sacks allowed. Also, BC’s running game has been excellent due chiefly to their OLine.

Seems like a good hire.

Name is (copying and pasting this) Phil Trautwein.

How does BC have so many great assistants come through, but can never win anything?

BC seems able to "do a Wisconsin" about every 7-8 years or so, I think.

I may have mentioned some of these before:

2 Penn State players have entered the portal so far.  They were pretty deep on the depth chart.

Shaka Toney (DE) is coming back for his senior year.

Penn State has a new WR coach, Taylor Stubblefield of Purdue fame.

Not sure if it has been mentioned in this thread, but they also poached Minnesota's OC.

By my count Penn State is still 4-5 scholarships above 85.  Three likely early NFL entrants have stayed.  Something to keep an eye on this off season.

There are always transfers and/or retirements after Spring ball, and sometimes during "Fall" camp.

Kids who have been in the program for 4 years, are graduating, and have no shot at the field sometimes leave too.

Those are the best ones - the school did them right by getting them graduated, for free.

It kinda feels dirty; over recruiting like Michigan and Alabama.  On the other hand, Penn State lost a CRAZY amount of guys to the portal last year, so the 85 limit is nowhere near as easy to keep on top of as it once was.

It depends on the circumstances. If the kid has a degree, it's all good. He got his 4 years. If he thinks he can play elsewhere, he can do so immediately. I find that most just retire.

Minnesota is losing 11 scholarship seniors and will lose on to the NFL, but they signed 24 players and still have 2 more committed. Now that is an example of having a lot of "difficult" conversations. Like, 14 of them.

Penn State's defensive line coach has left for an NFL job.  He was probably the second best D-Line coach in the conference, after Larry Johnson.

A LOT of coaching turnover in the offseason.  This one hurts the most so far.

DJ Brown, a cornerback that played sparingly and was buried on the depth chart is transferring after his graduation in April.

He will have 2 years to play at another school.  He was actually pretty good when he was given the opportunity.  He could potentially be a very good player wherever he goes.

Rutgers, are you listening?

By my count, Penn State is still at least 4 scholarships over the 85 limit.

RB Ricky Slade has entered the transfer portal.  Although he is very talented, he did seemed to get passed up by the younger guys on the team.

Penn State is still 3 scholarships over the 85 limit or so.

Penn State wide receiver Mac Hippenhammer is no longer on the roster.  He was a two sport athlete, and it appears he will be focusing exclusively on baseball now.  I can only assume he will now be using a baseball scholarship instead of a FB scholarship.

Penn State is still two above the limit.  Normally I would say that spring football would result in a couple of transfers, but....
