THIS WEEK IN HUSKER HISTORY

«1898: Fielding Yost gets ready to accept the coaching job at Nebraska. Lincoln would be one of several one-year stops for Yost before he landed at Michigan and eventually in the College Football Hall of Fame. Coincidentally, Yost replaced another future Hall of Fame coach at Nebraska, Eddie “Robbie” Robinson, whose two-year tenure produced a 10-4-1 record. | HOF Huskers

1923: Memorial Stadium's cornerstone is put in place during a ceremony attended by about 500. Groundbreaking had taken place about a month earlier.

1973: Bill Olds, Rich Glover and Joe Blahak are named to the College All-Star team that will play the Miami Dolphins in mid-July.

1988: Richard Schnell, a referee who broke his leg when be became entangled in television equipment along the east sideline at Memorial Stadium during the 1987 UCLA game, files a lawsuit against ESPN.

According to Brett McMurphy of Action Network, Nebraska will play its Black Friday game against Iowa at 11 a.m. CT on CBS, a return to a network NU hasn't played on in many years. That game is in Lincoln.

While the Huskers have appeared on CBS sporadically for some bowl games, including the national championship win over Florida and more recently Nebraska's Gator Bowl win over Clemson to finish off the 2008 season, NU hasn't been connected to that network in regular-season competition for a good while. Nebraska's last Black Friday appearance on the network dates all the way back to a 1990 game at Oklahoma. The latest Big Ten TV agreement has opened the door to Nebraska playing games again on CBS.

McMurphy also reported NU's other Friday game, the Oct. 6 contest at Illinois, will be at 7 p.m. CT and televised on FS1.

The Huskers will open the season at Minnesota on Aug. 31 (Thursday) at 7 p.m. CT on FOX. It will be the second straight season the Big Red has opened the season against a Big Ten opponent on FOX.

The Huskers’ first home game of 2023 will be against Northern Illinois at 6 p.m. on FS1.

NU’s Oct. 6 game at Illinois has been set for a 7 p.m. kickoff on FS1, and its Oct. 28 homecoming contest with Purdue has been set for 11 a.m., 2:30 p.m. or 3 p.m. CT with the network to be announced later.

Was noticing Nebraska opens on the road this year @ Minnesota on a Thursday night. Aug 31 in Minneapolis. And the day before the Twins have a noontime home game Vs Cleveland. Too bad work has me on the road that week. Would make a great lead-in to the Labor Day Weekend.

THIS WEEK IN HUSKER HISTORY
The week of June 16-22, looking back in five-year intervals

Nebraska vs. Michigan at Nebraska Field, 1911.

1908: Nebraska's board of regents OKs a $30,000 land purchase for "a football field and drill grounds." Nebraska Field, just south of today's Memorial Stadium, would be the Cornhuskers' home for 14 seasons.

1953: Nebraska is scheduled for its first national telecast as NBC selects the Huskers' Sept. 19th home opener against Oregon. The Huskers' first regional telecast was against Colorado in 1951, and the Huskers' 1949 and 1950 home games were televised locally on WOW-TV.

1963: Coach Bob Devaney and a pair of his 1962 seniors, Thunder Thornton and Dwain Carlson, arrive in Buffalo, N.Y., to begin preparations for the East-West All-America game.

1988: Defensive coordinator Charlie McBride says defensive lineman Lawrence Pete may be welcomed back after the senior-to-be quit the team during spring practice. Pete would earn all-conference honors in 1988.
