The Big Ten Conference officially released Nebraska’s 2023 football schedule on Wednesday.

Here are five takes on the Huskers’ scheduling draw for 2023.

Four straight years with a conference opener
For the fourth straight season, Nebraska will open with a Big Ten Conference game. In 2021 they played at Illinois, in 2022 they faced Northwestern in Ireland, and next year they will open at Minnesota on Aug. 31. In The 2020 season, NU played an all-Big Ten schedule opening at Ohio State.

Illinois and Northwestern took place on Week Zero, while the Minnesota game will be played on Thursday night of Labor Day weekend in Minneapolis.

The Gophers traditionally open the season on the Thursday of Labor Day weekend for various reasons, including the Minnesota State Fair. That is also the final big lake weekend of the summer in Minnesota, as schools do not start until the Tuesday after Labor Day by state law.

It will be a tough challenge for whoever Nebraska’s head coach is in 2023 to open at Hunnington Bank Stadium.

Expect a lot of red to travel to Minneapolis and Boulder
Since Nebraska joined the Big Ten, it’s been much harder for NU fans to travel to road games.

The 2023 schedule offers Husker fans a great opportunity to drive to Minneapolis on Week 1 and to Colorado for their Week 2 match-up with the Buffalos. There should be great excitement and optimism for these games as well, as it will either be Mickey Joseph coaching the Big Red with plenty of off-season momentum or a completely new head coach in Lincoln.

These are destinations where we could see 15,000 to 25,000 Nebraska fans make the trip. In fact, on every trip the Huskers have played at Minnesota we’ve seen 10,000 to 20,000 NU fans in Hunnington Bank Stadium. During the 2019 game at Colorado, Nebraska fans occupied over 60 percent of Folsom Field. I would expect a similar turnout on Sept. 9.

2023 is another year of a favorable crossover draw

Nebraska fans can no longer complain about their crossover draw. Of East Division powers Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State, the only ones they drew were the Wolverines on Sept. 30.

The Big Red also has a road game at Michigan State on Nov. 4 and Maryland will come to Memorial Stadium on Nov. 11.

It’s the second straight year they have only played one of the three East powers. The 2022 Husker schedule has Indiana, Rutgers and Michigan.

Seven weeks with just one road trip
Because Nebraska opens with two straight road trips, the Huskers have just three games away from Memorial Stadium over 11 weeks.

After the Colorado game on Sep. 9, the only time the Big Red will leave Lincoln before Nov. 4 is for an Oct. 7 game at Illinois. That’s seven weeks with just one road trip when you count the Huskers’ Oct. 14 bye weekend.

This will be a great schedule for whoever NU’s coach is in 2023 to build some early momentum at home.

THIS WEEK IN HUSKER HISTORY

«1892: After Nebraska's 18-4 loss to the Denver Athletic Club, the Lincoln Evening News pokes some fun at the sport.

1937 Jack Dodd run vs. Indiana, detail

«1937: On the first play from scrimmage, Nebraska’s Jack Dodd takes a shovel pass from Johnny Howell for a 65-yard touchdown, and that holds up for a 7-0 win over Indiana despite the Hoosiers' substantial statistical advantage. Attendance was a record 39,360, including more than 6,700 in the knothole section. | OWH | DN

«1962: In a bruising defensive battle, Missouri hands Bob Devaney's first Nebraska team its first loss, 16-7. The Nov. 3 game marked the beginning of the home sellout streak that continues today.

1967: Nebraska becomes the nation's leader in total defense after a 29-0 win at TCU. (The Blackshirts would finish the season No. 1, yielding just 157.6 yards per game.)

1972: The Huskers shut out their fourth consecutive opponent, Oklahoma State, giving No. 3 Nebraska a 332-34 point differential over its opponents after seven games.

Nebraska football now has a new NIL tool to bolster its walk-on program.

Big Corn Energy announced its formation Tuesday afternoon, naming itself the first NIL energy drink. As part of its plan, the company will kick back 25% of its profits back to Nebraska walk-ons. Obviously, the famed walk-on program has produced some of the best players in Huskers history, including All-Americans turned NFL draft picks Jared Tomich and John Parella.

An Omaha-based company, Juvenile Brands will run the day-to-day operations of Big Corn Energy, per a press release. The new energy drink already has merchandise, too, which will also give 25% back to walk-ons.

Nebraska walk-ons will not split the profits that Big Corn Energy provides. Instead, the company plans to use a profit-sharing model based on seniority. Walk-ons who have been in the program for four or more years will receive 40% of the profits. From there, the number will decrease by 10% off of the athlete’s class.

Big Corn Energy will be open about the amount of money it raises, too. The company plans to provide the size of its distribution by a meter on its website.

“Walk-ons bring passion and drive to practice every day, and they help set the tone for Saturdays,” the company wrote in a statement. “A strong walk-on program is essential for any college football team looking to consistently win year in and year out.”

How this could impact Nebraska walk-on program?
Big Corn Energy will be basically working in a method similar to a NIL collective. Instead of asking for donations or establishing a monthly subscription, all funds will be procured by profits. From there, the energy drink has the right to distribute the cash how it sees fit.

And while it does incentivize the walk-on position at Nebraska, it is not pay-to-play. Big Corn Energy is simply putting its plans available to the public. It’s the same tactic major NIL collectives, such as The Volunteer Club, have taken on by making as many NIL activities open saw prospective athletes understand the opportunities they will have.

According to a report from John Brice from FootballScoop, there are two former Big 12 head coaches that are getting a look for the job: Gary Patterson and Matt Rhule.

Coach Prime Time Neon Deion Sanders to Nebraska? I think he'd crush it there. Does Nebraska have the balls?

I think Prime is gonna end up at FSU eventually. Mike Norvell isn't gonna last there.

don't know if it's true, but heard that Prime is still pretty salty/pissed off at FSU for not answering his phone calls or interviewing him for the HC job there.

If Jeem ever leaves for the NFL- Deion Sanders would be my #1 choice and it's not even remotely close.

if Prime wants to get back at FSU, his best move would be to take over the Canes and crush the Noles for a few seasons

During the "GameDay Grab Bag" segment, Howard was asked who'll be the next head coach of the Cornhuskers.

Howard is predicting that Matt Rhule will become Nebraska's next coach. He also addressed the recent rumors linking Deion Sanders to the job.

“This morning, I was on the desk and I was talking to Mike, who's a Nebraska fan. He said there were rumors that it was going to be Deion Sanders,” Howard said, via 247Sports. “Well, Deion, Coach Prime, had to address it with his team that he has not had any conversations with Nebraska. So, it's not going to be Deion. The next coach (will be) Matt Rhule.”
