Linebacker Damian Jackson has been awarded the Armed Forces Merit Award. It is presented annually to honor an individual and/or a group with a military background and/or involvement that has an impact within the realm of college football.

The award recipient is selected by a panel of individuals from the Football Writers Association of America and the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl.

"Damian has distinguished himself as a collegiate football player after serving four years in the Navy," said executive director of the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl Brant Ringler. "Damian’s off-the-field involvement at Nebraska has been remarkable and we have followed his progress in Lincoln for the past three seasons since he was also a finalist for the Armed Forces Merit Award in 2019."

Jackson, an Armed Forces Merit Award nominee in 2019 and 2020, served as a member of the Navy SEALs after graduating high school. Although he had never played football, Jackson walked-on at Nebraska and earned a scholarship last season.

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - Husker fans could see an end to the balloon release tradition, which dates back to the 1960s.

On Nov. 10, the Association of Students of the University of Nebraska (ASUN) unanimously supported a resolution, authored by student senator Kat Woerner, to encourage stopping balloon releases on campus and at Husker football games.

This isn’t the first time ASUN has passed this resolution. The first was passed in Spring 2021 but Woerner said the news of this “got lost in the action of COVID-19.”

Since the 1960s, Husker fans have released their red balloons after the first touchdown. But students with ASUN said that equates to thousands of balloons each year polluting waterways, fields and homes.

You have these Canadian geese just choking on all of these balloons, and then they are just dropping out of the sky into heavy pedestrian traffic areas throughout the Lincoln/Omaha region. Very dangerous.

My son loved it.

Until I asked him to be careful for when Pennywise showed up.

Nebraska student-athletes have posted the highest rate in school history as they achieved a 95 percent NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR), continuing the Huskers' long tradition of being a national leader in the classroom. The NCAA released its GSR scores on Thursday, with Nebraska ranked fourth of out 109 public Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) institutions.

Nebraska's 95 percent GSR rate for all student-athletes ranks high in the Big Ten and nationally. At the conference level, the 95 percent mark is tied for third among 14 Big Ten schools. On the national scale, Nebraska's GSR is tied for 10th out of 130 FBS institutions. The 95 percent GSR rate marks the 11th straight year Nebraska has increased its GSR.

"We have always taken pride in being a leader in academic achievement at University of Nebraska," Vice Chancellor/Director of Athletics Trev Alberts said. "I am honored to serve at a school that focuses on developing well-rounded student-athletes, and I am proud of the young men and women who have worked to earn their degrees while competing as a Nebraska student-athlete."

The Huskers' record-high GSR score includes 13 programs that achieved a perfect 100 percent GSR. Those teams included baseball, men's basketball, men's gymnastics, men's tennis, women's basketball, women's golf, women's gymnastics, rifle, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, women's tennis, and volleyball.

One of Nebraska’s most important returning players will pursue professional football, as center Cameron Jurgens announced that he will declare for the NFL Draft. He announced the news in a social media message on Tuesday night.

He thanked Husker Nation in the announcement and said "playing for Nebraska has been the greatest honor I have ever received."

Reserve defensive back Nadab Joseph is no longer a part of the Nebraska football team.

In two seasons at NU, Joseph played a total of just five defensive snaps and three snaps on special teams.

The Miami native came to Lincoln by way of Independence (Kan.) Community College as one of the top-ranked junior college players in the country.

Before that, he was a Rivals100 recruit in high school that was once a commitment to both Alabama and Georgia.

Joseph has not officially entered the transfer portal at this time.

In other roster news, HuskerOnline also confirmed that defensive lineman Chris Walker will not be coming back in 2022 for a sixth year of eligibility.
