I am "high" on Nebraska this year, in large part because it is Year Two.  I don't know why, but teams with Y2 coaches seem to do better than expected, consistently.  No, I don't have the statistics on that, I'm sure there are some outliers.

Mullen did at Florida.  Smart did at UGA.  Will Pruitt at Tennessee?

How much you offering?
Oh, nothing.  I only asked out of pure intellectual curiosity.

What UNL did in year 1.5 makes me think they will be a very good team in year 2.

so, I'm escaping the office in a few minutes.  Headed to Lincoln for the Spring game.

I'll be staying in Lincoln tonight and Saturday night, golf on Sunday in Omaha.

Will be tailgating at the Sharkwater site if anyone wants a Budweiser!

Nebraska picked up a very interesting and potentially important late 2019 commitment over the weekend from defensive tackle Jahkeem Green. The Highland Community College defender committed to the staff while in person on his official visit over the weekend. Highland Community College coach Judd Remmers confirmed the commitment on Monday night.

The addition of Green, who has course work to finish up to become immediately eligible, gives Nebraska another defensive tackle for the 2019 season.

Green will sign as soon as the next NCAA signing period opens next month. Nebraska has been diligently working to add to its 2019 cycle after having several spots open at the end of the period in February.

Green was productive during his time with the Scotties. This past season he finished with 67 tackles and 2.5 sacks from the defensive tackle spot. As a freshman he finished with 49 tackles and four tackles for a loss.

Originally from South Carolina, Green ended up at Highland after high school. The defensive tackle attempted to go back and play for his home state Gamecocks, but he was unable to qualify academically in December. The Gamecocks moved on in the second signing period and he did not sign then either, leaving Green open.

The defender took one other official visit to Tennessee, but remained at Highland and continued to work toward qualification. Nebraska got in the mix late and continued a dialogue. Remmers, an assistant at Highland, believes that helped set the door for the eventual commitment that came on Green's own official visit.

Once Green signs and completes the course work, he'll be able to join the Nebraska football team in the summer.

Dennis Leblanc has crunched the numbers like any good veteran academic director would, and he’s determined that if Adrian Martinez sticks on his current path, the Nebraska quarterback could become a nominee for Academic All-America honors this fall as a sophomore.

If that holds true, and Martinez is honored, he would be the first Nebraska quarterback in more than 20 years to become an Academic All-American.

The last one?

That would be Scott Frost, now the Nebraska head coach.

Frost earned second-team honors in 1997, so Leblanc, the Nebraska Senior Associate Athletic Director of Academics, likes to kid Martinez that he could top his coach by making first team.

Either way, it’s of no coincidence to Leblanc that the Nebraska football team’s latest academic achievement has come with Frost at the helm.

Entering the spring semester, the Huskers’ 3.001 team cumulative GPA is the highest Nebraska football team GPA since the school began tracking it in 1992-93. In addition, the 3.008 team GPA from the fall is the football program’s highest in a fall semester since 1989-90.

“I was ecstatic to see our team GPA come out where it was,” said Frost, beginning his second season as Nebraska’s head coach. “It shows we have a lot of people doing things the right way. I’m obviously grateful to Dennis and Keith Zimmer in Life Skills and all the academic support people that are helping our team.”

Leblanc deflected that praise directly back to Frost.

“In tracking these grade point averages for 30 years, it’s pretty remarkable when you look at it,” Leblanc said. “When people talk about coach Frost and how he’s changed the culture, it’s just amazing when you look at what he’s done. I knew it was going to improve a lot (with academics), but I didn’t know it would be that significant.”

For example, 60 percent of football student-athletes had a 3.0 or better GPA in the fall 2018 semester. That was an increase of 14 percent compared to the fall 2017 semester.

Redshirt freshman defensive back Cam Jones came to Nebraska with a lot of promise a year ago, but he'll leave NU without seeing the field.
The former four-star recruit did not practice for most of the spring to address academic issues.
HuskerOnline has confirmed that Jones will leave NU and enter his name into the NCAA transfer portal.
Jones is the fourth scholarship player to move on from NU this spring, joining senior punter Caleb Lightbourn, junior linebacker Quayshon Alexander and sophomore linebacker Breon Dixon.
No other scholarship players are expected to be moving on from the program following the spring. Final exams at UNL will take place next week.
Jones' departure puts NU at 81 players on scholarship heading into the month of May.

Wide receiver Kanawai Noa is set to join the Nebraska Cornhuskers this fall. The Cal graduate transfer receiver announced his intentions to join the Huskers on Instagram on Sunday.

He posted a photo of himself in a Nebraska jersey and a photo alongside Troy Walters.

While at Cal, Noa caught 94 passes for 1,224 yards and six touchdowns. Noa's best season came his sophomore year when he pulled in 56 receptions for 788 yards. This past year Noa dealt with an injury that sidelined for much of the 2018 season, but he did return for the Cheez-It Bowl where he made a pair of catches.

It's the second addition from Cal this year, as Noa joins Tony Tuioti, who joined Nebraska as the defensive line coach in February. Originally from Hawaii, Noa was a three-star commitment in the 2015 class. He'll have one season of eligibility remaining.

The addition of Noa will be a bit of a boon for Nebraska at wide receiver. The Huskers lost its top wide receiver in Stanley Morgan this past season. Morgan leaves as Nebraska's all-time leader in yards per season and career.

Noa, who stands 6-foot, 185 pounds, joins seniors Mike Williams and Jaron Woodyard in the position room. It's Nebraska's second graduate transfer addition, joining defensive tackle Darrian Daniels, who committed and enrolled this winter and spent the spring with Nebraska.

Booting off of comments (copied below) from @medinabuckeye1 in ELA’s countdown thread, I completely agree. As a big believer in Frost, year two is where we’ll see the big jump. It’s one of those scenarios where it’s easy to point out how Nebraska doesn’t have the top shelf talent of Ohio State or Penn State yet, but that isn’t the point for Nebraska going into this season. The greater point is I’m expecting the core talent that’s already in place to be much improved across the roster to the point that the higher-focus pieces (the QB) will have a much easier job with a well taught roster around him.

Another help is the division. I don’t see anyone as a particular front runner like Wisconsin of the past few years. The mixed bag of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and NW looks like a setup where all could go 2-2 Vs each other. Toss in Nebraska and I’m counting on Frost & Staff to exploit the larger flaws each of those four opponents have.

Fun times in the B1G West!

I see Nebraska as a wildcard where almost nothing would surprise me.  With most of their toughest opponents at home and most of their easiest on the road that could go either way:

If they are somewhat better than ELA projects:  They could be an 8-1 or 7-2 team.

If they are as ELA projects:  They could be a 1-8 or 2-7 team.

Their schedule means that the gap between 7-2 and 2-7 isn't very large.

Not to turn this into a B1G West thread, but in my grouping of Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, & NW to make my point about the competitiveness of the division, I forgot to mention Purdue whom I believe has the roster depth and coaching staff to be every bit the tough out anyone else is.

I think the roster is a year out from being able to challenge for the division title. I think the talented incomers are too young to do it consistently.

Per your statement of being a "tough out", I completely agree. I think it'll be the sort of team who can beat anyone on any given Saturday. Just think they'll also lose enough games due to inconsistency to be out of contention.
