Nebraska (2-4, 4-5) at Purdue (2-4, 3-6) Post Game
« on: October 30, 2019, 09:18:26 PM »
The Matchup
Nebraska returns to the road on Saturday for a Big Ten West matchup against Purdue at Ross-Ade Stadium in West Lafayette, Ind. The game is set to kick off shortly after 11 a.m. CT (Noon local in West Lafayette) and will be televised by FOX. The game can be heard on the Husker Sports Network from Learfield-IMG.

Nebraska will enter the contest with a 4-4 record and a 2-3 mark in Big Ten Conference action. The Huskers are coming off a 38-31 setback against Indiana last Saturday at Memorial Stadium. Despite the loss, the Nebraska offense got back on track in the game, surpassing 500 yards for the first time in four games, while putting up more than 200 yards both rushing and passing.

Purdue comes into the game with a 2-6 record and a 1-4 mark in the Big Ten Conference. The Boilermakers are coming off a 24-6 loss to Illinois on Saturday afternoon in West Lafayette. Coach Jeff Brohm's squad has been ravaged by injuries throughout the season, but still boasts one of the Big Ten's most explosive passing attacks. Purdue will come into the game averaging 301.2 passing yards per game, while completing 60 percent of its pass attempts.

Saturday's matchup is a key to the bowl aspirations of both teams. Nebraska must pick up two victories in the month of November, while Purdue must win each of its final four contests to qualify for a bowl game for the second straight season.

Series History
Nebraska and Purdue meet each season as members of the Big Ten West Division. Saturday's meeting will be the seventh straight year the teams have met in the regular season.

• Nebraska holds a 4-3 edge in the all-time series between the schools, including a 4-2 advantage since the Huskers joined the Big Ten.

• The schools have split four games in West Lafayette, including a Purdue victory in 1958, which was the only meeting of the schools before Nebraska joined the Big Ten.

• Nebraska has scored at least 25 points in all six meetings since 2013.

That loss at Purdue four years ago was the lowest moment for Nebraska football in my lifetime, eclipsing a couple nights during the Billy C era and I say this with due respect to our Purdue friends here on the board, and my Purdue friends here locally in Indy.  I was very happy to be in Phoenix for a wedding (and the UO at ASU Thursday night game) that weekend and far away from that debacle in WLAF.  My Dad and younger brother were at the game, he said it was the worst loss he'd seen since a loss to Hawaii in the 1950s, my brother said it was an overall depressing scene.  Very small crowd, crappy weather, I've forgotten the name of the backup QB that played for Nebraska, and of course Purdue housed them for a double nickel.

regrettably, I won't make it to this game Saturday, despite a nice invite from JHetfield.  I've got some prior commitments.   I see it will be unseasonably chilly.  bundle up.

Nebraska Cornhuskers (2-3, 4-4) at Purdue Boilermakers (1-4, 2-6)
NOON - West Lafayette, IN - FOX
In their loss to Illinois, Purdue's bowl hopes seemingly vanished as well.  We've said that the past two years as well, and both times the Boilermakers won out after picking up their 6th loss, to qualify.  But that was never more than a two game winning streak, even if it included a surprising win over Iowa in one year.  Right now, it's hard to get a grasp on the program's momentum being torn in opposite directions.  On one hand Jeff Brohm turned down his alma mater, and Purdue ponied up to reward him, and the recruiting is going well.  On the other hand, since beating Iowa last year, the Boilermakers have gone 3-9, which was precisely their record in 2 of Darrell Hazell's final three seasons.  But if there is anyone who isn't feeling sorry for Purdue, it's Nebraska, who has gone from division favorite, to fighting for bowl eligibility, likewise losing a starting quarterback to injury, and their best offensive weapon (although due to legal issues, rather than injury).  Adrian Martinez, who was a game time decision last week, but didn't play, seems sure to play this week, although last week, the absense of their starting quarterback was not any part of the problem.  Three players (including a trick play from receiver JD Spielman) combined to complete 20 of 23 passes for 294 yards, 1 touchdown, and no interceptions, and another 97 rushing yards, on 5.1 ypc, with 2 rushing touchdowns, from the quarterback position.  The issues were where the Huskers once prided themselves, running the ball and playing defense.  Wan'Dale Robinson and Dedrick Mills combined for 113 rushing yards, but needed 30 carries (3.8 ypc) to do it, and had 2 fumbles.  Then defensively they assumed they'd get a break when Michael Penix, who was also a game time decision, also didn't play.  Instead, Peyton Ramsey had probably the best game of his career, completing 68% of his passes, for 351 yards on 8.8 ypa.  His QBR was the highest of his career against an FBS team.  So going from Indiana's Big Ten leading 296.6 passing ypg to Purdue's #2 259.4 ypg seems like trouble.  Really, Purdue is more an issue of quantity than quality though.  They are completing 10% fewer of their passes, and their ypa of 6.5, is only 9th.  That doesn't stop them from throwing the ball over 40 times per game in conference play, 56% of the time.  And now, Jeff Brohm has gone and created a quarterback controversy, where none previously existed.  Jack Plummer, who had been the man since Elijah Sindelar went down, struggled mightily in the rain against Illinois, going 7-19 for 69 yards and a pick six.  So Brohm put in sophomore Aidan O'Connell, who really didn't do any better, but did generate a meaningless touchdown drive late, once Purdue was down 24-0.  Either way, Brohm then announced an open quarterback competition after the game...only to reverse course Monday and say the job was still Plummer's.  These are probably the two most disappointing teams in the conference this season, but Nebraska is getting healthier, Purdue isn't, and Brohm seems more at a loss right now than Frost.

Trust me, for pretty much anyone in the B1G to lose to Darrell Hazell is a nadir of a football program, ESPECIALLY a program with such a proud history as Nebraska.

The only other Big Ten team to lose to Hazell was Illinois [twice].

Not great company to be in.

" Brohm seems more at a loss right now than Frost."

That sums it up nicely.

Adrian Martinez continues to practice with all appearance he's ready to play, though Scott Frost didn't confirm one way or the other that he's the guy at quarterback. Asked how Martinez is looking for the game, the coach said, "Adrian looks like he's got dark hair and he's about 225 pounds – that's how he looks."

I was at that game.  There was more visible rage and disgust w Nebraska fans in attendance than there was joy and excitement by Illini fans in their own stadium.
