FWIW:

Bama's streak of 164 consecutive poll appearances is #4 all-time but they will not be moving up anytime soon. They need 45 more weeks of being ranked to catch #3 Florida's streak of 209 consecutive poll appearances from 1990-2002. They need 47 more weeks of being ranked to catch #2 FSU's streak of 211 consecutive poll appearances from 1989-2001. They are not even half way to catching #1 Nebraska's streak of 348 consecutive poll appearances from 1981-2002.
Ohio State's streak of 99 consecutive poll appearances is #19 all time and I believe that they could move as high as #13 this year by passing Ohio State (103 from 2004-2011), Bama (105 from 1991-1997), Miami, FL (107 from 1999-2006), KSU (108 from 1995-2001), UNL (112 from 1969-1977), and Michigan (114 from 1998-2005).

FWIW:

Clemson's and Bama's streaks of 44 top-10 appearances ties them with Nebraska (1978-1981) for 31st all time but they could move up a lot this year. 45 would be good for 30th, 46 for 28th, 50 for 23rd, 51 for 20th, 52 for 19th, 54 for 18th, 55 for 15th, 56 for 14th, 58 for 13th.

FWIW:

Bama's streak of 39 consecutive top-5 appearances is good for #9 all-time and with nine more they would move to #2 all-time. They need 16 to catch #1 Miami's streak of 55 consecutive top-5 appearances from 2000-2003.

Bama's streak of two consecutive #1 appearances is good for about a 60-way tie for 135th but they could move up considerably this year. 13 more would get them into a seven-way tie for 6th all-time with themselves, tOSU, OU, UNL2x, and Army.

I suspect Oklahoma is going to miss Mayfield (duh), he was really good. These days Clemson gets penciled in near the top every year which is a testimony to their program how.

Usually the top 3 end up in the top 10, the other 7 end up in the top 20 save one bust, and then you have a mixture, with some team from the 10-20 range making the playoffs.

FSU and Miami were pretty bad, Purdue had their day in the sun. OU didn't really miss Mayfield much. UGA ended up playing 3 currently ranked teams, losing to one.

If we take the AP top 16 or so, teams in red did significantly worse than expected, and in green somewhat better. My memory is that usually 3 of the top ten fade pretty significantly each year so this is right on target, so to speak. The next 6 had 3 more who faded, that perhaps is a bit higher than normal. Only ND did better than expected, though from 12 there isn't much room to do better. Penn State did somewhat worse but could end up ranked. Ergo, preseason polls aren't "useless", but they are of course not perfect either, nor are any of us. The top three in a preseason poll almost always end up ranked in the top ten.
