This game, and the Indiana at Iowa game are the best B1G games in week one. A lot of people expect a Penn State “bounce back”, after a disappointing 2020 season. Penn State has won the last 4 vs Wisconsin, but playing at Camp Randall is difficult (Penn State is fortunate that this is not a night game). Which team worked harder, over the Summer, and which team wants this one more? A lot of questions will be answered here.

The battle of QBs that have had their moments, but have largely disappointed so far?  I feel better about Mertz finding his way than Clifford.

Mertz will be improved.

Last season all of his WR were out for the season after week 2.

In our Preseason Power Rankings we have Wisconsin second and Penn State third and it is close.  If we are correct in our assessment this game will tell us who has the best chance to unseat the Buckeyes.

The series:
These two teams only played twice before PSU joined the league.  Wisconsin won 20-0 in 1953 and 29-16 in 1970 both in Madison.  Then they missed each other in PSU's first two years in the league (1993/4).

  • They played four straight years from 1995-1998, 2-2
  • Missed two years from 1999/2000
  • They played eight straight years from 2001-2008, 4-4
  • Missed two years 2009/10
  • They played three straight years from 2011-2013, 2-1 PSU
  • Penn State won the 2016 B1GCG between the two
  • Penn State won at home in 2018

That adds up to a 10-9 advantage for the Nittany Lions made up as follows:
  • Wisconsin leads 6-4 in Madison
  • Penn State leads 5-3 in Happy Valley
  • Penn State won the only neutral site game

As close as the overall series is, the Nittany Lions have won four straight and six of the last seven with Wisconsin's last win coming a decade ago.

Note that Wisconsin's win in 1995 snapped a 20-game winning streak for PSU and was only their third ever conference loss.

Those stats are also telling relative to the HFA thread, and why I'm nervous about it.

I'd say the opposite.  HFA doesn't seem to mean anything in this series.

whats the story on the two Freshmen RB's at Wisconsin?  apparently there was two guys 1 knife and a heated exchange resulting in one getting kicked off the team and the other suspended?

will this have any affect on the team this week?

or since its freshmen they were not going to play a big part?

I did this for another thread but from 1970-2019 Penn State is 5-3 against Wisconsin at home which is 0.625 and only 4-5 in Madison which is 0.444 for a difference of 0.181 or a little under two games out of ten.  That isn't nothing.

I viewed your post for answers, not questions. Damned, you. You are forcing me to wait until Saturday.

I am not the Shell Answer Man, and I have not invested deeply into each team's strengths and weaknesses, but that said, Wisconsin seemed quite a bit off last season, and Penn St. came back in the end. Therefore, I think Penn St. wins at Mad Town.

We don't know the story. Probably something stupid.

No.

Correct. Not even close to being in the depth.
