#18 Michigan State (2-1) vs. Arizona State (3-0) Post Game
« on: September 10, 2019, 12:13:01 PM »
Both teams seem to have offensive line issues.  MSU's looked better against a bad defense last week, while ASU's has struggled against a pair of bad defenses.  If MSU is able to consistently generate pressure with 4, they should be good.  Make their true freshman QB make a lot of quick decisions, with 7 men dropping.

Dantonio did specifically mention Renell Wren graduating, who absolutely ABUSED us last year.  I honestly can't think of an interior lineman looking that dominant since Suh

As I said in the Pac thread, yes Wren is gone but his replacement is nothing for opposing OL's to celebrate. DJ Davidson won't outright bullrush your center the way Wren did but he's a lot more agile, much better laterally, and has more moves in his arsenal than simply "maul/bullrush". He was actually stealing reps from Wren last year until he suffered a season ending injury in week 8.

But yeah, the ASU OL has been trash so far against weak ass teams so unless they discovered some miracle they will be abused this Saturday as well. Our true freshman QB has shown to have quick reaction time under pressure and we are solid at the skill positions, unfortunately I don't trust our OC to figure out the Northwestern style "dink and dunk to death" offense that seems to work vs MSU.

Our D overall seems much improved, and I especially love the way our secondary looks. If the Spartans want to move the ball on us they absolutely need to establish a running game early to give Lewerke and the WRs a good shot at some open looks.

All in all, I'm predicting a low scoring Spartan win, they'll probably get a defensive score to seal it.

MSU 24
ASU 13

ASU’s OL Vs MSU’s front seven is such a mismatch favoring the Spartans that I don’t think ASU bettering MSU in the rest of the other matchups will be enough to amount to a win.

Arizona State Sun Devils (2-0) at #18 Michigan State Spartans (2-0)
4:00 - East Lansing, MI - FOX
Last year Michigan State's high hopes began to wilt in the desert, making it the next stop on Big Ten revenge weekend.  Arizona State still has plenty of weapons, that gave the Spartans defense fits last year, in spite of the low score.  The difference is Michigan State's defensive line is a lot better, and Arizona State's offensive line is an absolute mess.  It was already going to to be a point of weakness for the Sun Devils, and then injuries have exacerbated the situation.  Across the board on Football Outsiders their line ranks in the bottom 30, including 5th worst in sack rate.  Michigan State's defensive line ranks #2 in overall line yards, #5 in standard plays, and #1 in power success rate at 0.00%, meaning they have not allowed a 1st down conversion on a single 3rd or 4th and 2 or less.  Also, while it was the Spartans trying to adjust to the trip and the climate last year, it's now on Arizona State.  While the weather extreme won't be like last year, Arizona State does have a true freshman making his first career road start.  He's going to be under pressure all night, so he's either going to have to play well over his head to make tons of quick decisions, on quick routes, or play a Houdini to create on his own.  The Spartans made a clear choice to focus all efforts on N'Keal Harry last year, and let other guys beat them.  It sort of served it's intended purpose, in spite of Harry's 6 catch, 89 yard effort.  But the other wepons did make them pay, and Arizona State threw for 380 yards, led by Eno Benjamin who was totally shut down running, but had his best game of the season as a pass catcher, with 6 catches for 54 yards.  Arizona State already resorted to that plan this year, due to their blocking troubles, with Benjamin only picking up 69 yards on 2.9 ypc against FCS Sacramento State, but catching 4 passes for 94 yards.  They rank dead last in the FBS in team rushing yards among teams who haven't yet faced a Power 5 team.  Arizona State's defense will serve as a very good barometer for whether Michigan State's offense is actually "fixed" or if last week was a mirage.  The secondary is unproven, but the front seven, which gave the Spartans line as much trouble as anyone last year, looks to be even better, even without a singular talent like Renell Wren.  If the Spartans can establish some running game, even if it doesn't quite look like last week, I just struggle to see how the Sun Devils score even as many as the 16 points they scored last year, with a better offense, at home.
MICHIGAN STATE 28, ARIZONA STATE 14

From a game management perspective, this might have been as bad as it has been under Dantonio.  Staff crapped the bed.  Twice dropped 8 and allowed Daniels to pick up long conversions with his legs.  Wasted two timeouts.  Waited too long to decide to run a play or kick the FG, and the resulting scramble from the late decision resulted in too many men on the field...which they still could have avoided if they hadn't wasted the two timeouts.

The offense wasn't great, obviously, but just so many points left on the board.  It wasn't the same as the inferiorating performances from last year.  Based on the analytics, MSUs expected points based on their offensive production was 27.  They scored 7.  It takes an amazing amount of coaching mistakes, special teams gaffs, and stupid penalties to have 404 yards of offense, and score just 7 points.  For comparison, Minnesota had 380 yards today and scored 35.

Wasn't Coghlin the Preseason All-BIG TEN choice as top kicker? This game is why I've said for quite some time ALL plays should be reviewable. The referee was positioned perfectly making sure no one touched the center(FG try),he didn't miss seeing the guy come over the top - he was just too incompetent to realize there was an infraction. And I realize said refs missed a call against ASU that I didn't see. MSU deserved to lose, but the players should determine that not an incompetent official.Coach gets one flag a quarter to throw,it won't extend the games length, just run already planned commercials that they insert anyway. With technology it would take a whole minute at most.

Dantonio obviously had a lot of confidence in his defense and DL to use up all his timeouts while playing D and going cover zero in front of Daniels on fourth and 13 during ASU winning drive.

Also, the officiating in this game was pitiful.  Sparty is known for collecting penalties.  But having said that, I was feeling a little miffed about the officiating well before the last play of the game.  The officiating felt biased.

How do you so thoroughly dominate a game statistically like that and lose? It's not even like there was some major turnover disparity.

I wondered the same thing after seeing the score, stats, and lack of turnovers. Initially I was predisposed to just blame MSU's offense but they got 400 yards. Yardage wasn't the problem.

It’ll be one of those what the hell games that gets talked about for several seasons to come. Lewerke threw for 291 yds for zero interceptions but despite no obvious blame to point in his direction, it just feels like his time is up to be anything beyond a par for the course QB. As a QB Lewerke does exactly what he’s supposed to, without doing anything more, partly because Dantonio and Salem are incapable of providing Lewerke with better material to work with.

Which brings me to the coaches. It’s not unfair for Dantonio to blame the refs - I’d be pissed too - but it ignores how the bad reffing went hand in hand with one coaching lapse after another in the final mishandled moments of coaching indecision.

Today’s Detroit Free Press lays out the last 20 seconds pretty well: https://www.freep.com/story/sports/columnists/shawn-windsor/2019/09/14/michigan-state-football-windsor-arizona-state/2327508001/
