But the current predicament is optimal strategy based on statistical evidence.  It's selling out for competition-sake, which is in direct opposition to the entertainment end of things.

And baseball is clearly no longer "America's game." Football is. Baseball hasn't fallen back to hockey, yet, but it seems to be behind basketball as well.

Hockey was never top 3.  I think the better comparison/warning would be boxing.

I know. Just some dry baseball ribbing. Though where I'm from, it was unconscionable that hockey may not be the runaway most important sport on Earth.

The NHL vs. NBA thing is a hilariously hot button issue in Pittsburgh.  I think most people here would be shocked at how hockey doesn't just fall behind basketball, but doesn't even come close to it.
