#16 Michigan (5-1, 3-1) at Illinois (2-4, 0-3) Post Game
« on: October 07, 2019, 07:39:58 AM »
Michigan visits Urbana for a Noon EDT kickoff.  Illinois starting QB Peters is out with a concussion so the Wolverines will likely not need to turn on the offensive overdrive engines as they did against Iowa.

Michigan  6
Illinois    0

As disappointing as the offense has been, it's still scored at least as many points as its opponents have given up on average for each game. They certainly dominated the weakest defenses (Middle Tennessee and Rutgers). Meanwhile, Illinois hasn't played a very good defense all year, so this game shouldn't be close.

Any way to view this as a trap game at all?

The Wolverines win this one by at least a million points.

I doubt it.

On the one had, Michigan's next game (@PSU) is a pretty big deal but I don't see it as a likely trap game for two reasons:

First, I don't think that Michigan has looked good enough to where their players and coaches are lulled to sleep thinking they are all that.  Instead, they've been facing some pretty extreme criticism.

Second, even if Michigan is looking ahead I just don't think Illinois is good enough to take advantage.

Michigan would have to commit multiple turnovers, all within the shadow of their own end zone, in order for this one to stay close.

Illinois should not be this awful.
Apathetic fan base and students don't help. There is no big money flowing in, outside of the TV shares. The boosters shut off years ago.

Lots of coaching hire blunders and a crap stadium don't help. Location is also tough. Champaign is not Ann Arbor or Madison or East Lansing or Iowa City.

People who should be Illinois fans are mostly Bears fans. And Kubbs fans. And Blackhawk fans. And Bulls fans. 3 (or 4) are Sox fans.

My Illinois alumni friends couldn't give a crap less about Illinois football, and even their interest in hoops is waning.

Apathetic. No doubt.

A downgrade to MAC status might be in order. They are not Premier League material.

It'll be interest to see if/what effect the eventual addition of the hockey program has on their fan base. For Penn State, it gave them a winter sport to care about. Of course, Illinois used to be consistently good in basketball (and maybe this year they'll finally get back to the top half of the league and make the tournament).

I've never been to Champaign, but I've met enough Illinois grads, especially from when I lived in Chicago, to get that they look at their football program as a lost cause at this point, at least for now. Of course, the Purdue fans I met 3 years ago kind of felt the same way back then, and their situation wasn't that different, so I think it could just take the right coaching hire.

Iowa State, Washington State, Kansas State, Kentucky, Baylor, Duke, Mississippi State, California, Wake Forest, and of course Northwestern have all had more success in recent years with similar or worse support, while other programs with more advantages have underachieved as much or moreso (eg. Tennessee, Nebraska, UCLA, Arkansas, Maryland).

YAWN. BFD.

Get back to me when they go play Penn State on the road. That's when we'll see if this team has any balls and has actually rebounded from the ass whooping they took from Wisconsin in Madison.

Anthony Broome@anthonytbroome

Harbaugh asked about how he'd rate QB development under him at Michigan as far as recruits go. Wouldn't really go into it. "Would rather not toot my own horn."

Wow
LOL. The guy has clearly jumped the shark and lost his mind. He's not the same coach. He's on meds and he's a sorry sack of shit and a shell of himself. He's lost it.

Why toot your own horn, when the coeds let you toot theirs for free?
