#12 Michigan (8-2, 5-2) at Indiana (7-3, 4-3) Game Week
« on: November 18, 2019, 07:25:25 AM »
Time: 3:30 PM EST
TV: ESPN
Line: Michigan -7.5

The Hoosiers have given Michigan trouble the last few years.  Indiana led at halftime in Ann Arbor in 2018 and 2016 and took Michigan in to overtime in Bloomington in 2017.  This year's version of the Hoosiers is the best I've seen in years.  Is this a trap game for Michigan?  How will the Hoosiers respond after their loss to Penn State?  Will Michigan maintain focus after their delicious stomping of Sparty and not look ahead to the Buckeyes?  I don't have a clue how this one plays out.

A decade of Victory over Penn State.

All in since 1969

Indiana last won a game in this series in 1987. Before that, it was 1967.

Michigan better take care of god damn business. I could definitely see an emotional let down after they blasted MSU and have THE GAME a week from Saturday. Indiana is no joke. They look like a heckuva team. Jim has to have these guys ready to battle for 60 minutes. I'm nervous as hell for this one. Don't feel good.

IU will most likely be without Whop Philyor. He's in concussion protocol after one of the worst targeting non-calls I've seen in a while.

Indiana clearly has a shot here but might need a couple TOs bouncing their way.

They are a nice story, but they have fattened up on cup cakes. I know they played the Lions tough, but right now their best win is either Nebraska or Ball State. Now fattening up on cupcakes is a lot better than being the cup cake, but they have yet to beat anyone with a pulse. I'll be pulling for the upset, but doubt that it will happen.

Michigan has been playing much better the past 3 games in many ways. They've been much more efficient on offense, even when they've been forced to throw (eg last weekend), they've been dominant on defense, they've been much better on special teams, and they've had a positive turnover margin.

Indiana has challenged Michigan in recent years, but those games have often been surrounded by games in which Michigan wasn't playing well, anyway (certainly that was the case the past 3 years). Against almost everyone else, Michigan has basically dominated inferior competition under Harbaugh. Yes, this is probably the best Indiana time in my life time, it's a home game for them, and they just challenged Penn State in Happy Valley, but I think Michigan will be focused for them and keep playing well.

I'm expecting a game like 34-23, though.

Indiana has been very close to multiple good teams lately but they always seem to come up just short.

  • 2019:  One TD loss in Happy Valley to a very good PSU team.
  • 2018:  IU played tough against Ohio State being down just one score at halftime and only nine points heading into the fourth quarter in Columbus.
  • 2018:  Five point loss at home to PSU.
  • 2018:  11 point loss in Ann Arbor in what was a one score game deep in the fourth quarter.
  • 2017:  Played Ohio State tough deep into the game even holding a lead late in the third quarter before Ohio State pulled away with the final 29 points to win 49-21.
  • 2017:  Pushed Michigan to OT.
  • 2017:  Played Wisconsin tough and entered the fourth quarter only down one score before the Badgers scored the final 21 points to win by 28.
  • 2016:  Played Ohio State tough in what was a one score game deep in the third quarter before Ohio State scored the final 14 points in a 38-17 game.
  • 2016:  Played Michigan tough in Ann Arbor even holding a 10-6 lead deep in the third quarter before Michigan pulled away with the game's final 14 points for a 20-10 final.
Some day the Hoosiers are going to finish one of these upset bids but I don't think it will be this weekend.

Without Penix or Whop, I don't see how Indiana has a chance there.

I get that Penix has been good, but I've seen this type of post a lot lately.  Ramsey has looked like a very capable QB and has played well this year when starting.  What am I missing that makes everyone think it's a gigantic dropoff to Ramsey?  I mean 31/41 for 371 and a TD against PSU isn't exactly struggling at the QB position.

#13 Michigan Wolverines (5-2, 8-2) at Indiana Hoosiers (4-3, 7-3)
3:30 - Bloomington, IN - ESPN
Is a trap game a trap game, if it is identified as a trap game as soon as the schedule is released?  Indiana has given Michigan fits recently, but hasn't been able to break their losing streak to the Wolverines.  Combine that with being slotted between rivals Michigan State and Ohio State on the schedule, and yeah, we've known about it.  If someone says "hey, watch out for that trap door, right there," and points to it, and you still fall through it, that's not a trap, you're just incompetent.  I said back in September after seeing Michael Penix that the Hoosiers were for real.  What I didn't expect is that they would be just as real with Peyton Ramsey.  Penix is 3rd in the Big Ten in Total QBR, but Ramsey is 5th.  Ahead of guys like Jack Coan, Nate Stanley, Shea Patterson, Brian Lewerke, Adrian Martinez and Josh Jackson.  Nobody would have believed that preseason, but boy are the Indiana faithful glad that the former starter didn't hit the transfer portal as so many others in his position have.  The Hoosiers may be without Whop Phiylor, probably the only offensive weapon who can threaten the Michigan defense.  He's the shifty slot athlete who mismatches against linebackers in Don Brown's sytem, as Penn State and Ohio State have exploited.  Indiana has a solid group around him, but Wolverine cornerbacks seem to otherwise match up well.  Indiana is the lone Big Ten team averaging over 300 passing yards per game in Big Ten play, 3rd in ypa, averaging 37.1 passing attempts per game, 2nd only to Purdue.  So as effective as this offense is, if the passing game doesn't work without Phiylor, it could sputter in a hurry.  Coming off the best game of his Michigan career, Shea Patterson has no such concerns, after facing significant benching speculation earlier in the year.  Over his last 5 games, he's thrown 10 touchdowns to just 1 interception, and now gets to throw against a Hoosier secondary that has one of the lowest interception rates in the country, tallying just 1 through 7 Big Ten games.  Oh, and the "away" crowd will probably end up being about 50/50 Michigan fans.
MICHIGAN 33, INDIANA 21

I think that is the right call.  My only hesitation is that a game for Michigan in between blasting Sparty and THE GAME just sounds like it has "Trap Game" written all over it.

That said, I feel that Michigan has been playing NC caliber ball since just before halftime of their game in Happy Valley and I expect that to continue with a dominating performance in Bloomington.
