#10 Penn State (2-1, 5-1) at #5 Michigan (4-0, 7-0) Post Game

Michigan drops to 5th in the AP poll. Guess they don't have enough sexy/style points.

This one is a big one, probably the game of the week in the B1G and will have huge implications for the B1G East title. Opening line has Michigan as a 7 point favorite, o/u is 51.5 points. Penn State is a really good team, this should be a heck of a game.

I kind of like that Michigan played a crap game on the road vs Indiana and still won by 21. Feel like they brought a C effort and were way too sloppy with like a dozen penalties and made way too mistakes and that there is a lot of stuff the coaches can grill these guys on. If those coaches don't have their full attention and aren't ripping them over their performance vs Indiana and getting them locked in to prepare for Penn State and bring their A+ effort at home- something is very wrong.

They need to unlock JJ more and let him throw down the field and get way more creative in their stale out-dated passing game. Not sure that's something they can do in a week. But the passing game and play-calling seriously concerning.

The defense has been getting better every week. Mike Sainistril looks LEGIT. Shocking how good he is honestly. Pass rushers are finally starting to emerge for this defense. Mike Morris is taking that jump as a player, and Eyabi Okie is just making plays the more they put him out on the field and the true frosh Derrick Moore has been making plays whenever they put him on the field. I think all 3 of those guys are future NFL draft picks at edge.

Penn State is coming off a bye week and Michigan off a win in Bloomington impressive enough to drop them one spot in the AP poll.  Penn State has been looking good this year with a couple solid wins on the road.  This year Penn State has the best RB room since Barkley was in it.  Both teams are going to have to play their mistake free best to win.  Michigan starting WR Wilson and LB Hill-Green were out last week with injuries and RT Jones was rolled up and had to leave the game with l leg injury.  Your guess is as good as mine if any of them will be back for the game with the Nitts.

Dropping in the polls can happen if another team near you has an especially impressive win obviously.  And we all know polls are just for fun at this point.

If they are fun at all.

Evidently the 17-7 win over the Wildcats was in a mudbath as heavy rain passed thru. Penn St had 5 turn overs but their defense had a goal line stand. So the Lions have a decent shot - if they can hang on to the ball. The Ninnies entered the game second in the country at plus-8 in turnover margin. Hopefully it's a bare fisted brawl as the BIG needs a marquee match up to fit the billing

Michigan's play calling has been soft vanilla the last few games.

James Franklin is 3-5 vs Michigan at Penn State and 1-3 in Ann Arbor. His win in Ann Arbor came in 2020- the dreaded COVID year- which was probably one of the worst seasons in Michigan football history. They were dreadful that year. Michigan as a program seems to have bounced back from that disaster and abortion of a season- going 12-2 and making the playoff in 2021 and are off to a 6-0 start in 2022.

The games in Ann Arbor:

2014: 18-13, Michigan (Brady Hoke's last year)
2016: 49-10, Michigan
2018: 42-7, Michigan
2020: 27-17, Penn State

my guess is WR Roman Wilson should be back- he was held out due to concussion protocol. If he's not showing any symptoms- should be good to go.

LB Nikai Hill-Green probably still out unfortunately. TE Erick All probably out as well. Feel like if either of these guys were coming back, we'd have heard rumbling by now.

RT Trente Jones probably out as well- had to be carted off and looked like an ankle, knee, or leg injury.

the last few games? Michigan's offensive play calling has been ass since Harbaugh got there. Those anemic, uncreative, out-dated offenses with putrid passing game concepts = Harbaugh. This is just who he is.

SP+ rankings...

4) Michigan (25.4) - #8 offense, #9 defense, #3 special teams

14) Penn State (15.7) - #46 offense, #6 defense, #68 special teams

SP+ has Michigan as a 12 point favorite and gives them a win probability of nearly 77%.

Side note: Michigan and Georgia are the only teams in the country that rank in the SP+ top 10 nationally on offense, defense and special teams.

EDGE defenders Mike Morris, Eyabi Okie, Jaylen Harrell, and Derrick Moore have been tested to step up and replace two great edge rushers in Hutch & Ojabo and to generate sacks and pressures, and so far they have passed that test.

Michigan RB coach Mike Hart is back in Ann Arbor and doing well, hopes to rejoin the team soon. Mike Hart's old RB coach when he was a player at Michigan- good old Fred Jackson- has been given a waiver by the NCAA to be the interim RBs coach at Michigan in Hart's absence.
