Guns could be banned from Michigan Capitol after armed protests. Gov.
« Reply #84 on: May 07, 2020, 06:37:23 PM »
 Whitmner says it's 'long overdue'

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer threw her support behind a movement to ban firearms in the state Capitol following armed protests last week.
"There are legislators who are wearing bulletproof vests to go to work," Whitmer, a Democrat, told NBC News in an interview published Wednesday. "No one should be intimidated by someone who's bringing in an assault rifle into their workplace. And so there is conversation about changing that law."
"I think it's long overdue, and I absolutely support that change," she continued. "You shouldn't be intimidated going to be the voice of the people who elected you."
Michigan is an open-carry state, meaning that gun owners are allowed to carry weapons in the Capitol. The Michigan Capitol Commission has asked for legal guidance as to how the legislature could go about making such changes.

During recent protests against Whitmer's coronavirus stay-at-home order, armed protesters gathered inside the state Capitol building and chanted "let us in" while trying to get onto the House floor.

The armed protests have been criticized across the ideological spectrum, including Fox News host Sean Hannity. Libertarian candidate for president Justin Amash also condemned the protests, calling the armed gatherings "a terrible idea."

I'd be OK with banning firearms in a state Capitol building.

If they install metal detectors.

Gun Store Owner Fined $60,000 for Remaining Open in New Mexico
« Reply #88 on: May 08, 2020, 03:17:52 PM »
A New Mexico pawn shop has stayed open in complete disregard of the state’s shutdown order, which mandates the closure of all so-called “non-essential” businesses.
For the terrible crime of trying to keep its doors open and earn a living, Diane Rowe, owner of Papa’s Pawn & Gun, has been fined $60,000 and told to appear in court. Rowe is facing fines after state police warned her to close her store.
According to an April press release from state police, the New Mexico Department of Health is authorized to carry out emergency public health orders by levying a daily fine of $5,000 on the third or subsequent warning.
Law enforcement revealed that the pawn shop was given a cease-and-desist order on April 14 and a citation to appear before court after the store continued to stay open.
The Governor’s Office sent a copy of the letter from the Department of Health to The New Mexican. According to the letter, Rowe was assessed a fine of $60,000 for staying open for 12 days or longer after being directed to close.
Rowe has contested the penalty. She believes the fine should have been issued after the third warning. She asserted that she only received two warnings before the government slapped a stiff penalty on her for the days the store stayed open before the citation.
Rowe views the $60,000 penalty as “clearly just retaliation” for “standing up for my rights.
“This is about our small businesses being just picked off,” Rowe said. “I am getting a hold of lawyers now and trying to figure out what we’re gonna do. I would like to be able to stay open. It’s my constitutional right to be able to earn a living.”
Rowe took several precautions, such as maintaining social distancing policies and limiting the number of people who could be in the store at any given time.
Rowe was a part of a small group of store owners in the town of Grants, New Mexico who stayed open after the city’s mayor, Martin “Modey” Hicks, instructed city employees to go back to work and encouraged businesses to open up their doors despite the statewide restrictions in place.

Bloomberg Is Recruiting Pastors And Religious Leaders To Push For Gun
« Reply #89 on: May 15, 2020, 12:37:42 PM »
Control; Blind Sheep Following A Rotten Shepherd

The left fights with their gloves off.  They go for blood.  They’re not above gouging eyes, biting and low blows. But our side dances around and wants to always be seen as the nice guy, the good guy.

And because of that, we take blow after blow right on the chin. What’s worse?  The left knows we won’t fight dirty and they use that knowledge to get the knockout.

Case in point:   Everytown for Gun Safety issued a press release saying that they’re recruiting major Christian pastors and leaders to help them get their gun control candidates elected.  In fact, they’ve got over a dozen ‘religious leaders’ recruited already.
Getting Jesus In On Their Gamble
This is all part of their big push for the 2020 election — a push that includes spending more than $60 million dollars to get key legislators elected in key seats.  Keep in mind that they’re not trying to upset the strong titans of the pro-gun crowd.  No, they’re going after the weakest links.  Who can they quickly unseat and replace with an anti-gunner and change the majority to anti-gun?
That’s what they did in Virginia, that’s what they’re trying in Texas and other places.  And now they are using religious leaders to spread their message. So far they have recruited leaders from Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu and Sikh backgrounds.  Many of these are already progressive activists and proud of it.
A partial list of those leaders Bloomberg has recruited includes:
  • Evangelical Shane Claiborne, president of the group Red Letter Christians
  • Rev. Traci Blackmon, a United Church of Christ executive minister and a central member of the Black Lives Matter movement.
  • Rev. Rob Schenck — previously an anti-abortion evangelical, now a pro-abortion radical progressive who thinks that being pro-life is synonymous with being anti-gun.
Lots of Emotion, Not A Lot of Logic
Schenck made this moronic statement:  “You never want to pray for something you’re unwilling to be the answer to,” he added. “So if we pray for a reduction in gun violence, we have to be ready to act on that prayer.”
The assumption is that all gun use is immoral, so if we want to end gun violence we have to give our guns up.  But that assumption is flawed.  Let’s show the poor logic by substituting another crime in there and seeing if his analogy holds.
“You never want to pray for something you’re unwilling to be the answer to,” he added. “So if we pray for a reduction in rape, we have to be ready to act on that prayer and stop sleeping with our wife.”
Because there is a legitimate moral use of a gun, just as there is legitimate relationships between spouses, we don’t’ have to choose to do away with all gun ownership to stop gun violence any more than we have to do away with all sex to do away with rape.
We can be as much against gun violence as they are, without passing a single gun control law.  We are against the immoral use of guns –murder, armed robbery, attempted murder, etc.  Being against the immoral crimes involving guns doesn’t mean we have to be anti-gun.

Sorry, Schenk.  Save the third-grade attempt at logic for more easily-fooled sheep.
Bloomberg’s Plan Is Transparent
Bloomberg is going to focus on the statistically obscure church shootings, such as in Charleston, SC where nine African Americans were killed.  He’ll also focus on shooting in synagogues or mosques so they can stir up racial anger while they’re at it.  This is an age old tactic by the left: create division!  Class strife, racial strife, economic strife…all serve a purpose to the radical left.
But there’s one church shooting that won’t get mentioned.  That’s the shooting that was ended by Jack Wilson of the West Freeway Church of Christ in White Settlement, TX.  See, the left isn’t interested in saving lives.  They’re interested in twisting the narrative against gun owners.
These religious leaders haven’t been retained because they’re experts on what is moral or ethical.  They’ve been retained because they’re radical progressives — like Everytown and their elitist ‘master behind the curtain’, Mike Bloomberg.

Mississippi: Citing COVID-19, Jackson Mayor Bans Open Carry
« Reply #90 on: May 20, 2020, 05:27:00 PM »
Democratic Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba over the weekend announced he has suspended legal open carry in Jackson, Mississippi by executive order.
In a video released by the City on Saturday, Lumumba cited the city’s current state of emergency in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, saying he was granted powers under state law that allowed the move.
“The open carry law not only provides protection to individuals who are armed with illegal weapons, it creates an atmosphere of fear and intimidation in the community,” said Lumumba. “We cannot continue to turn a blind eye to the fact that the open carry law has led to an increase in gun violence into our communities.”
Mississippi adopted a popular open carry law in 2013, followed by constitutional carry measures in 2015 and 2016. Further, the Magnolia State has strict preemption laws against local firearm regulations which allow for significant penalties for city and county public officials who violate the statute, including a personal fine of up to $1,000. Other state laws forbid cities from regulating otherwise legal carry of firearms in times of declared emergency.
In response to the news from Jackson, Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch on Sunday said, “Cities can’t usurp the authority of the State’s elected Legislature and violate the Constitutional rights of the people. I support the 2nd Amendment and will enforce the laws of this State.”
Lumumba has supported Everytown-backed initiatives in the past including declaring June 2nd “Gun Violence Prevention Day” in Jackson just months after he took office. So far this year, the first-term Democrat has held high-profile events with former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, last month endorsed Bernie Sanders for president and two years ago said he wanted to turn Jackson into the “most radical city on the planet.”
Meanwhile, Moms Demand Action has described Lumumba’s move to void open carry in the state’s largest city,  a “Wise decision!”

Los Angeles Releases Inmates as Sheriff Warns Against Buying Guns
« Reply #91 on: May 23, 2020, 09:16:19 AM »
The Los Angeles County Sheriff is doing all he can to limit the number of inmates behind bars during the coronavirus outbreak while telling residents that buying guns is a bad idea.
During a press conference on Monday at the Hall of Justice, Sheriff Alex Villanueva said his Department has reduced the jail population by over 600 in the past two weeks by releasing some inmates early.
Additionally, the Sheriff cut the number of arrests after he raised the bail amount for booking inmates from $25,000 to $50,000, which allows more suspects to be released with a citation, rather than be taken into custody. This latter move has dropped daily intake from a typical average of about 300 new guests at the county’s jails to around 60. According to the county bail schedule for Los Angeles, crimes such as assault with a deadly weapon and vehicular manslaughter have a bail of less than $50,000.
In the same conference, Villanueva admonished LA County residents to not obtain the means to defend themselves and their families during the crisis, saying, “Buying guns is a bad idea.”
It would seem that some Angelenos would disagree, as reported by LA Magazine, “All across Los Angeles, from Culver City to Burbank, gun sales are booming.”
The LASD, which has the largest county jail system in the country, had 16,459 inmates counted as of Monday.

Pa. Background Checks Generate A Lot of False Positives
« Reply #92 on: May 23, 2020, 09:17:23 AM »
Pennsylvania, like most states, had a lot of firearm sales in March. The state performed over 300,000 background checks in the first quarter — over 8300 on March 20 alone — which was enough to briefly crash the state’s online system.
The Keystone State also had 4,866 denials during the quarter. No doubt victim disarmers will pat themselves on the back, pleased that thousands of dangerous criminals were prevented from going out and committing “gun violence.” Not so fast.
Only 1,226 of those were referred to law enforcement; 25% of the denials. The other 75% — 3,640 — were not referred. That implies that 3,640 people were improperly denied their Second Amendment rights. If they were actually prohibited persons, they should have been referred to law enforcement. If they weren’t prohibited, the state should not have violated their rights.
But the victim disarmers will see this as back-patable, too. I do not.
If Pennsylvanians are going to be saddled with preemptively-prove-your-innocence, presumed guilt background checks on an enumerated right, at least make sure the system works more than a quarter of the time.

Jackson Mayor Hit with Lawsuit, Spurned by City Council over Open
« Reply #93 on: May 24, 2020, 10:52:11 AM »
 Carry Ban

Just days after Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba (D) moved to outlaw legal open carry in Mississippi’s largest city, he is finding little support.
On Tuesday, the non-profit Mississippi Justice Institute filed a lawsuit against Lumumba on behalf of State Rep. Dana Criswell (R). The 13-page filing, in U.S. District Court, holds that the Mayor does not have the authority to override rights protected by both the U.S. and Mississippi Constitution, even during a state of emergency.

“As a citizen of the great state of Mississippi who has regular business in our capital city of Jackson, I was shocked by the recent announcement by Mayor Lumumba,” said Criswell in a statement. “I take the protection of myself and my family very seriously and believe deeply in the constitutional right to keep and bear arms. The mayor’s attempt to disarm me and deny me the ability of self-defense puts me and my family in danger anytime we are in Jackson.”

State Attorney General Warns

Other legal action could be on the horizon for Lumumba, a progressive who previously pledged to turn Jackson into the “most radical city on the planet.” Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch on Sunday rebuffed the Mayor in a two-page letter in which she explained that he did not have the power to bar open carry in the city.

“Mississippians enjoy the right to lawfully open carry in all of Mississippi’s 82 counties and in every municipality within the State,” said Fitch, a Republican. “The City of Jackson is no exception. The City lacks statutory authority to suspend a state statute or constitutional provision. Accordingly, I ask that you rescind the Order immediately. I take seriously my obligation to protect Mississippians’ constitutional rights, and I will take every action available to my office to ensure these rights are not infringed upon.”

Fitch’s letter was echoed and supported by national gun rights organizations including the National Rifle Association.

City Council Refuses to Support

Jackson’s Democrat-controlled City Council voted unanimously on Tuesday in favor of a resolution opposing a ban on open carry in the city, as reported by the Clarion-Ledger.  The lawmakers stressed they were not consulted on the ban beforehand and are disinclined to enter into what is shaping up to be a wave of litigation.

“I’m in favor of anything we need to do to lower crime in Jackson, but this is a legal issue for the city,” said Ward 6 Councilman Aaron Banks.

So far, the only supporters for the ban outside of Lumumba’s office seem to be anti-gun groups, with the state’s Mom’s Demand Action chapter calling it a “Wise decision!”
An online petition launched by Lumumba over the weekend to stump for a statewide ban on open carry had just 110 signatures as of Wednesday morning. It is not known how many of those, if any, are registered voters in the Magnolia State.

FBI: More people killed with knives, hammers, clubs and even feet
« Reply #94 on: May 28, 2020, 02:47:43 PM »
than rifles in 2018

It’s the data that the mainstream media tends to bury when it doesn’t fit their agenda.

According to the FBI, more than five times as many people were killed in 2018 by knives, clubs and other cutting instruments than with rifles.

The metrics show that there were a total of 1,515 deaths by knives or other cutting instruments last year. Compare that against 297 people killed by rifles.

It’s a gap that widened significantly over 2017.  In that year, the FBI said nearly four times as many people were stabbed to death as killed with rifles.  During that year, the number of murders with rifles was around 400.

It gets better.  More than 100 more people were killed with hammers and clubs in 2018 than were killed by rifles.  There were 443 people killed with hammers, clubs, or other “blunt objects”.

We need to point out that the data isn’t just semiautomatic rifles – it’s ALL rifles, including bolt action, pump or lever action rifles as well.

If you were to contrast the numbers between JUST semiautomatic rifles and knife homicides, the gap would be even larger.

Here’s another number that will blow your mind.  The data also shows that in 2018, there were 672 deaths from “fists, feet and other ‘personal weapons’” – which is once again more than with rifles.

In 2017, there were 692 people killed in the same way – a number larger than the total number of homicides by rifles and shotguns combined.

Yet you’ve got Democrat presidential hopeful Robert “Beto” O’Rourke campaigning on the confiscation of AR-15’s.  Remember – last month during a Democrat debate, he said:

“Hell yes, we’re going to take your AR-15.”
Numbers from the National Shooting Sports Foundation show that there are more than 16 million privately owned AR-15s in the United States.
Let’s look at the bigger picture, based on some 2016 data.

Rifles are only used in a small fraction of murders committed using firearms.
FBI data from that year showed that more than 7,100 people were killed using handguns, and that the vast majority of non-fatal crimes involving guns are also committed using handguns.

2012 study offers interesting reflections by a New Jersey intelligence center, which works in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
“Semiautomatic handguns are the weapon of choice for mass shootings,” the report notes.
According to the CDC, in 2017, six-in-ten gun-related deaths in the U.S. were suicides (23,854), while 37% were murders (14,542).
The rest were either unintentional (486), involved law enforcement (553) or had undetermined circumstances (338).
In 2017, gun suicides reached their highest recorded level … yet the number of gun murders remained far below the peak in 1993, when there were 18,253 gun homicides.  Also during that time, overall violent crime levels in the U.S. were much higher than they are today.

And although 2017 also brought the highest total number of gun deaths in America, it doesn’t account for the growing population of the country.
When you break that down on a per-capita basis, we’re talking about 12 gun deaths per 100,000 people in 2017 – the highest rate in more than two decades, but still well below the 16.3 gun deaths per 100,000 people in 1974, the highest rate in the CDC’s online database.
Suicides have long accounted for the majority of U.S. gun deaths.

Let’s dive further into that.
Both the gun murder and gun suicide rates in America are both below where they were in the mid-1970’s. In 2017, there were 4.6 gun murders per 100,000 people – considerably below the 7.2 per 100,000 people in 1974.
In 2017, there were 6.9 gun suicides per 100,000 people – that number was 7.7 in 1977.
The overarching idea behind the “gun-control” debate is this: The left wants to take away every last ability for citizens to defend themselves. Don’t believe me? Keep reading.
Last week, the U.S. House Judiciary Committee held a 3 ½ hour “hearing” entitled “Protecting America From Assault Weapons.”
That hearing covered issues that were framed to overlook the false narrative that Americans need protection from inanimate objects, and not from violent people with criminal tendencies. People who will use anything and everything at their disposal to carry out their violent plans.
The hearing also revealed the true agenda of the Democratic leadership, which was to lay out arguments In favor of the repealing of the 2ndAmendment, the illegalization of weapons ownership, and the left’s complete refusal to engage in useful conversation regarding how Congress might attack the issue of gun safety.

Easily the most eye-opening claim of the proceedings came when Dr. RaShall Brackney, Chief of the Charlottesville Police Department in Virginia responded to a question from Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) about whether she would support a ban on hunting rifles.
Quote
“I believe any weapon that can be used to hunt individuals should be banned,” Brackney replied.
Umm…what?
Her statement seemed to indicate that she would be open to the banning of all firearms, and more specifically, all weapons.
So, for those keeping score at home, here is a list of items that would also need to be banned, according to the good doctor.
Guns. Knives. Vehicles. Baseball bats. Fire. Rocks. Rope. Screwdrivers. Hammers. Hands. The list goes on and on.
While Brackney did not actually call for a ban of these other items, that is essentially what she is doing in using such careless language.
According to the NRA, Dr. Brackney was given two opportunities by pro-gun committee members to walk back or provide more context for that statement. Instead, she dug in and reiterated the statement.

Gun Stores Brace For Another Run As Violence Sweeps Through Cities

Nationwide Last Night

................And now, as the entire nation has the worst cabin-fever in it’s history, the story of George Floyd’s death at the hands of Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has taken the spotlight.
People already felt like their government wasn’t listening to them.  Thousands were already protesting the shutdowns that cost more than 30 million Americans their jobs.

Now, tensions have exploded in cities across the country.  From Dallas, TX to Des Moines, IA and from Atlanta, GA to Columbus, OH riots small and large erupted last night.

Too Little Too Late

Minneapolis’ mayor has shown himself to be entirely unequipped to handle the responsibilities of leadership.  He’s essentially given the looters and rioters free reign of the city.

In a move so ludicrous that it was hard to believe, Mayor Alec Kinsky actually had masks distributed into the crowds of rioters yesterday afternoon.
Maybe next he’ll draw out a helpful map of local businesses so that looters can maintain social distancing while they violate personal property rights?

Chicago: 82 People Shot,19 Killed During Deadliest Weekend of 2020
« Reply #96 on: June 02, 2020, 04:10:42 PM »
Social unrest and protests about the unjust death of George Floyd at the hands of police caused the deaths of more than a dozen black men in Chicago over the weekend.

Violent protests on Saturday night spilled over into Sunday, when more than half of the victims were shot.   The city saw hundreds of arrests during the weekend.  The rioting continued through the night despite a city-wide curfew.

David Brown, Chicago Police Superintendent, said that 17 of the 19 homicides happened on Sunday.  These numbers are significantly higher than this weekend last year, when only 52 people were shot and 8 killed.

We would normally give a rundown of the various circumstances, the ages of the victims or anything noteworthy about how they died.  But there are just too many to cover.
From an 18-year-old girl shot in the head to at least a half a dozen people being shot by people in vehicles, it’s just horrific from start to finish.
EVERY American Has The Right To Defend Themselves
Watching the widespread rioting and looting has made it clear that Americans need the Second Amendment more than ever.  EVERY American has the right to carry a gun to defend themselves, but the radical left wants to take that away from us!
They cause hatred and division when they can, and when that’s not working, they use fear and emotion to scare people into banning guns.
But the dangerous reality many Americans have faced in the last ten days — not to mention the social instability during the Corona scare — has gun owners more convinced than ever that giving up their guns is NOT an option.
And with gun sales soaring, we don’t think that’s going to change any time soon.

Police Chief Forced out After Praising Citizens Armed Against Looters
« Reply #97 on: June 07, 2020, 12:26:47 PM »
The police chief of Lowell, Michigan, was forced to resign Thursday after using a Facebook post to praise four citizens who armed themselves to oppose looters.

WOOD reports Chief Steven Bukala posted a photo of the four armed citizens and wrote, “So these fine young men called me today. They wanted to exercise their Second Amendment rights and walk down Main Street. They saw what happened in Grand Rapids. They said it’s not going to happen here. We have your backs. I thanked them for letting me know they were in town and to call if they see something.”

On the Lowell Police Department’s Facebook page Chief Bukala wrote, “We at the Lowell Police Department support the legally armed citizen and the Second Amendment.”

The Lowell PD reacted to Chief Bukala’s message by apologizing for his comments:
Quote
We have made mistakes on social media this week, starting with an ill-considered message posted on the Lowell Police Department Facebook page. We then defended this message, arguing with residents or dismissing their concerns.
On behalf of the City and the Police Department, we apologize to our community for these mistakes. At a time when residents looked to us for leadership, we failed. We must take this opportunity to listen and learn so we can work together to defeat racism and build a more just and equitable society. We can and must do better.
The Lowell City Manager claimed Chief Bukala’s post represented “conduct unbecoming of a police officer” and violated city police barring personnel from allowing “personal feelings to influence their professional conduct.”
Chief Bukala was told he could resign by 5 p.m. Thursday or be terminated at 5:01 p.m. Lowell resigned.

Truman said: “The fundamental basis of this nation’s laws was given to Moses on the Mount.  The fundamental basis of our Bill of Rights comes from the teachings…  If we don't have the proper fundamental moral background, we will finally wind up with a totalitarian government which does not believe in rights for anybody except the state.”
