i get a kick out of the ribbing between services... truly. it's not as malicious as it seems to others.
i worked with SEALS- they are impressive in the water. they also have toys- i mean a LOT of them. DevGru, as a for instance, ALONE has a budget larger than the entire USMC. Folks don't realize there are more SEALS than Army Rangers (75th regiment, that is). They also fail to realize only DevGru has the DA mission and are the only Counter Terrorist unit in the nations inventory (well, green side... there are plenty of black side Counter groups)... The remainder of the team's are Anti-Terrorist. there are also plenty of other 'anti-terrorist' groups in the services.
there was a lot of talk some time back, and possibly still remaining about spinning JSOC groups into their own service altogether. SOCOM is kinda already doing that but not exactly. there is a lot of internal strife and rivalry between groups on 'who gets what mission', and the unit's with the larger numbers usually get their pickings, it seems. RAIDERS, as an example, pulled many of it's (re)Founding members from Force Recon which depleted those ranks- but that may have been a good thing near the end as Force had gotten away from it's true purpose by cross-training with DA units. They're better served deep behind lines collecting intelligence than jumping around like ninja's on an objective- and the fit between CCT of AF fame fits nicely with this function- ANGLICO being the Marine comparison but not nearly as trained and equipped as the AF doing the same thing. likewise, Rangers (75th) are better served as a covering force for units like DevGru and some of the darker units- or spearheading entry into theater by whatever means required and opening a door for MEUSOC operations...
then there is the guy who types all day... w/o him, none of the above function. Then the dude who fuels and services their vehicles... those that transport them and their gear and plan their logistics.... those that do the actual fighting- the infantry- who also needs all the above on a much larger (albeit less specialized) scale.
peacetime, the folks that get to kick more doors and trigger time on live targets? the coast guard- Homeland Security, former DoT. they have some cool units. we got to spend some time with them in the Caribbean when they were still 'just' DoT.....
point is.... everyone has a purpose. all deserve respect.
