I don't know if McCain was a hero or not, but I'd take President Trump in my combat squad anytime...Hell of a guy.

McCain indeed was known as a "trouble maker" in his youth and at the Academy, where he graduated near the bottom of his class.  It's a surprise he made flight school, but of course his father was a well known Admiral and that likely had something to do with his getting into USNA and Flight School.

I met him circa 2006, with my daughter, who I took out of school to meet him.  I asked him to sign her "absence slip" for school, and he did.  His shoulders are clearly messed up and he can't raise his arms much at all due to maltreatment in his POW days.

I have a high regard for those who serve, especially those who have seen combat.  I don't know if they all merit the term "hero" or not, I'm content for everyone to reach their own opinions.

I would personally not strive to denigrate McCain's service.

Katman he was given a pass due to a medical condition after being examed by militarily Doctors
My definition of hero is not the bastardized one that many use today in the world where many things are redefined and history rewritten to be PC

So your saying he has no right to his opinion? How unAmerican of you
If you don't believe that he got his pass due to  his family paying off a doctor to come up with an excuse, you probably also believe the myth that Trump is some self-made business genius.

Trump chose to denigrate the service of every prisoner of war because he didn't like McCain.   He has the right to his opinion, but he was completely wrong, and showed himself to be the loathsome asshole that he is.

Next your going to tell me the CIA blew up the towers
McCain was not known as ''Songbird'' for his wonderful operatic singing voice.
As a note Trump did not denigrate every POW, just stated an obvious fact. Many POW's were heroic for some of their deeds.
As to family doing stuff to benefit a son you might want to research Songbird a little more
President Harry S. Truman said: “The fundamental basis of this nation’s laws was given to Moses on the Mount.  The fundamental basis of our Bill of Rights comes from the teachings…  If we don't have the proper fundamental moral background, we will finally wind up with a totalitarian government which does not believe in rights for anybody except the state.”

For those of you who don't really know what a real hero is and what one looks like.

Commonly called the most decorated soldier of World War II, Maj. Audie Murphy received the Medal of Honor, a Distinguished Service Cross, two Silver Stars, a Legion of Merit with Combat V, and two Bronze Stars with Combat V.

Murphy's foreign awards were especially impressive. He received the French Forrager, Legion of Honor, and Croix de Guerre with Palm and Silver Star and the Belgian Croix de Guerre 1940 with Palm. He also received the Texas Legislative Medal of Honor.
If everyone is thinking alike then somebody isn't thinking.

George S. Patton

I don't know of any evidence that the Trumps paid of a doctor to get Donald out of service.

Maybe they did.  It's supposition based on inference rather than any facts.
