Well by all means, we should put a nuclear reactor on the island of Kauai then.  (Population 66,000 with no heavy industry).

Because shipping diesel fuel thousands of miles and then consuming it to generate electricity is so environmentally friendly and cheaper than other sources.  And shoveling more money to the Middle East is such a good idea.

In my view, different locales may require different solutions.

I think that solar makes a lot of sense on islands hundreds or thousands of miles from other sources of energy.

But apparently for some people, solar never, ever makes sense at any place or at any time at any price.

Actually small reactors have been designed and some work in development that fits that bill. Very low maintenance, very long fuel life.

I know some Alaska  towns have looked at them. I just found an booked marked an article that discussed them but not to the length of the article to which I recall. I'll try to dig some more and fine it if it is on the web if not I'll post this one tomorrow or Sunday

Federal nuclear lab advances plan to build small modular reactor in Ontario
« Reply #30 on: October 30, 2017, 06:24:53 PM »
CHALK RIVER, Ont.—The eastern Ontario nuclear lab behind much of the technology that led to Canada’s first CANDU reactors more than 50 years ago is aiming to pioneer the next, smaller generation of nuclear power plant.
Earlier this month, Canadian Nuclear Laboratories released a report assessing the potential market for small modular reactors and what role Ontario’s Chalk River, Ont. research facility could play in getting the technology ready for the commercial market.
After gathering data from reactor developers, nuclear supply chain firms and research organizations, the federal research lab is moving forward with its plan to build and test a new small modular reactor at its campus northwest of Ottawa within the next decade.
“Canada is an ideal country in which to establish the global SMR industry, with a domestic need for the technology, a mature and robust regulatory environment, and most importantly, with the facilities and expertise that CNL can offer potential vendors,” said Kathy McCarthy, vice-president of Research and Development at CNL.

Note that the “renewables” including hydro and geo got 250% MORE subsidy than nuclear, and the nuclear subsidy came in the form of excess ragulation and R&D which really belongs to everyone. Regarding the “money in their pockets” kind of subsidy, the Nuclear Power Industry got a NEGATIVE $27Billion.

Not to worry Dan.
Over half of the renewable subsidies are going away - that is, all of the tax credits.
They drop dramatically each year and cease in total in 2020.

https://energy.gov/savings/renewable-electricity-production-tax-credit-ptc

Applying the inflation-adjustment factor for the 2016 calendar year, the production tax credit amount is as follows:

$0.023/kWh for wind, closed-loop biomass, geothermal energy resources, and solar systems that have not claimed the Investment Tax Credit

$0.012/kWh for open-loop biomass, landfill gas, municipal solid waste, qualified hydroelectric, and marine and hydrokinetic energy resources

The tax credit is phased down for wind facilities and expires for other technologies commencing construction after December 31, 2016. The phase-down for wind facilities is described as a percentage reduction in the tax credit amount described above:

For wind facilities commencing construction in 2017, the PTC amount is reduced by 20%
For wind facilities commencing construction in 2018, the PTC amount is reduced by 40%
For wind facilities commencing construction in 2019, the PTC amount is reduced by 60%

I recently started working for a fast-growing ESCo that finances a lot of commercial scale distributed generation projects - primarily solar but also CHP and occasionally other technologies. Despite the BS SolarWorld / Sunniva case, we are expecting the business (and market as a whole) to continue to grow quickly.

The DOE's BS proposal to subsidize plants that have a 30-day fuel supply isn't going to matter, either, even if it goes through. Neyvermind that frozen or wet coal isn't useful, either, in the aftermath of blizzards and tropical storms.

If you're not convinced that a more distributed grid is the solution at this point, look no further than the disaster that is Puerto Rico and other Caribbean Islands right now. If they have any common sense, they'll stop trying to replace their transmission and distribution infrastructure, and just build a collection of microgrids.

Until the next liberal gets in. However the environmentally unfriendly non base load co2 producing sources of power still get govt subsidizes
Meanwhile the tax payers and rate payers who have nuclear plants as part of their power source pay

Actually, the sunsetting of the PTC tax credit took place under the Obama Administration.

Meanwhile:

The American Wind Energy Association will not ask Congress for any more extensions of the wind production tax credit (PTC), AWEA chief executive Tom Kiernan

Neyvermind that frozen or wet coal isn't useful, either, in the aftermath of blizzards and tropical storms.

Hmm please tell that to all the utilities and manufacturers who use or used coal in the NE. (Do you even know anything about how coal plants work?)

Likewise my grandparents heated with coal never had a problems when it was froze, wet etc

Likewise you have no idea as to what damage blizzards or hurricanes do to so called green energy like solar cells and wind turbines. Will they work during either?  No!

Solar may work when it melts but after a hurricane the fish will curse all the pollution, a wind turbine will probably not survive a hurricane

As to grids micro grids don't serve rural areas and the big problem there (Puerto Rico) was the use of transmission poles that were not built to withstand the forces of nature there.

Granted some will always fail and it would take some time to repair a few towers and lines, however if you look to areas where they are built for the forces of nature present there, the basic HV lines are back up and running in a short period of time

As a note most Coal and Nuke plants can start back up if forced off line due to  hurricanes in a short period of time, blizzards don't bother them

Electricity producing no emissions..
(Nuclear, Hydro, Wind, Solar)

2008: 27.1%
LTM:  35.1%

Nearly 1% add of non-pollutant emitting sources per year.
40% by 2022?
