Confederate statue in downtown Franklin...
« on: September 02, 2017, 03:02:41 PM »
There's been a movement to take down the Confederate statue in the circle in downtown Franklin.  It was erected by the Daughters of the Confederacy (who still own the land) where it's stood for over 100 years.  One claim is that you can't tell whether or not he's a Union or Confederate soldier (his nickname is Chip because part of his hat broke off), although it's silly to think the people who put it up didn't intend it to be a Confederate soldier, particularly when one reads the reprehensible inscription beneath the statue glorifying the Confederacy (among other things).

My first thought was that since the majority supports the monument for a variety of wrong-headed reasons, maybe it should stand as a scarlet letter for the community.  Maybe Franklin deserves the statue - a badge of dishonor.  But the more I've thought about it, the more I think it should be replaced by something that memorializes the Civil War with the modern moral perspective we'd at least like to think exemplifies the "new" South.

I think they should replace it with a statue that represents the new progressive movement in the country.

No one makes you live in in Williamson County that's your choice so if your unhappy with what Southern people did honoring their ancestors move back to your roots, New Jersey.

New Jersey where incest is legal so an IGMO like you tries to bad mouth and belittle people in the South.

If everyone is thinking alike then somebody isn't thinking.

it is just a matter of time before they take down the American flag.  Something no enemy could ever do.

Of course, so called Progressives are an enemy of this country.

It's amusing that Fuzz would want to taunt Tennesseans about Confederate statues when Tennessee passed the 13th Ammendment freeing slaves almost a full year before New Jersey.
Either Fuzz has a complete ignorance of history or he feels the need to put others down in order to inflate his own ego.

What, Fuzzy is from Jersey? What happened Fuzz? Couldn't bear the high taxation. Like all Socialist you want people to be forced to give their money to the something for nothing's while you pocket yours so you move to TN.

If that's true Fuzz, you don't have a damn thing to say about the South that matters to me. Your perspective on the southern culture is worthless to me. You can take your yankee ass back to the arm pit of America where you belong so that you can live among your Liberal Loon brethren but like all Loons, you vote in policies to ruin everyone's lives where you once lived and then move away when it becomes unbearable to sustain.

trickle down economics was a media construct.  and they now act as if Reagan coined the phrase or was his design.

First of all... Texie, touche'.
Drew, "Obamacare" is a media construct, too.  So what?
Roady, that's good for Tennessee, but this isn't New Jersey vs. Tennessee.  If all you native born Tennesseans regret the outcome of the Civil War, then so be it.  Just come out and say so and look forward to the HBO series called Confederate with that premise.  If you are proud of the South's racist history and want to see it publicly celebrated, then so be it.  Again, just come out and say it.
The Confederacy lost a long time ago.  That is not a reflection on modern-day Southerners.  Your personal style, your dialect, your music, your entire cultural heritage are still in tact.  You should be disappointed in the moral and political treason of "your ancestors," and if anything, publicly celebrate that they lost the war.  There should certainly be no public celebration of "Confederate heroes."
Too many Southerners need to stop being so defensive, get over their inferiority complex, and reconsider what art is worthy of our public square.
