Selection Time!!! CFB51 style...
« on: October 31, 2017, 11:09:52 AM »
Wow- we're already at selection time, which is bittersweet at best.  The season is waning, now, but also building up it's case for grading production!

This is, of course, my opinion as it stands right now.  Discussions may or may not be able to alter that, but are offered and welcomed all the same at https://www.cfb51.com, and we hope to see you there.
Without further procrastination, and how it should stand right now:

The University of Alabama Crimson Tide is a machine.  They haven't really demonstrated and weakness.  They've certainly not even been challenged this season.  This is a no-brain'er.

The University of Georgia Bulldogs are Alabama light.  They have arguably the best starting defensive 11 crew in the nation, and they have hands down the best backfield in the land.  They've made a mockery of rivals this season, and have played consistent.  It could be said that this team is also playing above their station, meaning that their cohesion and level of effort may be something unsustainable and a big contributor to their success, but... they've yet to falter.
The University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish have but one loss, yet lack stellar resume.  Curiously, the loss they do have is where most their status derives.  They lost to Georgia by one point in a hard fought game.  At the time, it made Georgia seem more suspect in my mind, and lent no credit to ND at all.  Funny how hindsight works, no?  We could easily have witnessed a prequel to the National Championship Game on that September evening without having a single clue.

SNAP!!!!!

The "Not Distant Alternatives that still have a heckuva shot" are (again, imHo):

The University of Oklahoma Sooners have demonstrated weakness several times, and yet have held the losses to a single.  They lost to Iowa State, surprisingly, and were one of the first to be crept up on by that team who is destined to lose their coach sooner-than-later to one of the powerhouses prowling about.

THE Ohio State University dropped a big one- right off the bat- to the Sooners as we all know.  Since then, their QB JT Barrett has put up play-station-esque numbers.  They dispatched PSU in dramatic fashion just last weekend, and after recovering from a stout deficit.  They have the ponies; They have the tactician in Meyers; They have the determination.  They need help, though, when it's all said and done.  Winning out and skinning Badgers would go a long way in impressing a committee.

PSU had it all.  Just like Bogee and Becall.  Here's looking at you, kid:  You look pretty dang good and should have a Heisman winner in Barkley who just plain runs angry.  You guys fought and fought hard, but that fateful night in Columbus, you just couldn't hang on to win.  Old news, right?  maybe- but with a little help and a loss of traction, these guys could be right back in there.  Boom.  Bama vs PSU in the big dance.

The University of Tennessee Volunteers.  Hell yeah!!!  But, Hell No.  This is the only publication that will acknowledge the Vols as a team from this point forward in the season, and they likely won't play another bowl game until at least next year.  I'm a Vols fan.  From here south on the list, and in my opinion, it just doesn't matter who's listed, so, I choose my beloved.  Cases could be made for oSu cowboys, hurricanes, tigerpaws, toads, and maybe even a sled dog, but... They've all a long row to hoe, y'all...

As I said, this is just my opinion, and is open for discussion here.
